Lake Wylie is one of the oldest man-made reservoirs in the Carolinas, spanning the state line between York County, South Carolina, and Mecklenburg and Gaston Counties in North Carolina. The lake was created in 1904 when Dr. W. Gill Wylie and William C. Whitner dammed the Catawba River near the state border to generate hydroelectric power. Originally named Lake Catawba, it was renamed Lake Wylie in 1960 in honor of Dr. Wylie, whose pioneering energy projects led directly to the founding of Duke Power Company.

Throughout the early to mid-20th century, the shorelines on both the North and South Carolina sides served as quiet summer retreats and fishing havens, dotted with rustic lake cabins, community boat launches, and family docks. The opening of the original Buster Boyd Bridge created a vital transportation spine over the Catawba River, connecting York County residents directly to Charlotte and western Mecklenburg County.

The launch of River Hills in 1971—a gated master-planned community on the SC side—marked the start of Lake Wylie’s transformation into a premier year-round residential market.
