The neighborhood was once a part of a 3,000-acre (1,200 ha) farm owned by former North Carolina Governor Cameron Morrison. Directly adjacent to SouthPark Mall is Morrison Boulevard, which connects SouthPark with the Barclay Downs neighborhood.

The neighborhood of South Park in Charlotte, NC, is steeped in history. It all began when the 3,000-acre (1,200 ha) farm owned by Cameron Morrison was turned into the South Park Mall complex. Developed and jointly owned by the Belk and Ivey families, this mall originally boasted three anchor stores; Belk, Ivey’s, and Sears. When it was first announced that pastureland would be transformed into a shopping mall, most people were skeptical about it becoming a success. However, unbeknownst to them, the plans for South Park extended beyond just having an impressive retail complex. Subsequent residential developments ensured that South Park became more than just a shopping mall; as homes and businesses started to spring up around it.
