Tega Cay began in 1970 as a 1,600-acre master-planned Polynesian-themed resort community developed by Ervin Company founder Paul Ervin. Named “Tega Cay” (Polynesian for “Beautiful Peninsula”), the community was designed around Lake Wylie’s shoreline with winding tree-lined streets named after South Pacific islands like Tega Caya, Pago Pago, and Bora Bora.
To establish local municipal services and preserve its distinct peninsula identity, residents officially incorporated as a city in July 1982. Through proactive planning, Tega Cay expanded its municipal borders to include additional golf courses, waterfront parks, and new residential developments while maintaining its slogan, “The Good Life.”
