History of WaxhawMove here for great quality of life.

Waxhaw is one of the oldest towns in Union County, taking its name from the indigenous Waxhaw Native American tribe that originally inhabited the region. Settled by European pioneers in the 1750s—including the family of Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States—the area became an important agricultural trade center for cotton and livestock.

The town was formally incorporated in 1889 following the arrival of the Carolina Central Railroad. The railroad tracks split the historic downtown area, leading to the construction of Waxhaw’s famous overhead pedestrian bridge, built so residents could safely cross over passing freight trains.

Today, Waxhaw honors its rich heritage through its preserved historic downtown district, annual community festivals, and protected rural acreage. Combining historic charm with upscale master-planned developments, Waxhaw remains an iconic Union County community.
