History of SouthParkMove here for great quality of life.

Until the mid-20th century, the area now known as SouthPark was defined by vast green pastures, dairy farms, and rural acreage owned by prominent local families, including the Harris family (founders of the Harris Teeter grocery chain). The land primarily served as agricultural terrain positioned well south of Charlotte’s city limits.

The neighborhood’s identity shifted dramatically in February 1970 with the opening of SouthPark Mall, a joint venture between the Belk and Ivey department store families. Designed to serve Charlotte’s expanding southern suburbs, the mall rapidly transformed the surrounding crossroads into a premier regional commercial hub, attracting office buildings, executive park spaces, and fine dining.

Today, SouthPark stands as one of Charlotte’s largest employment and residential centers outside of Uptown. Blending established mid-century estates with luxury redevelopment, corporate headquarters, and vibrant outdoor gatherings at Symphony Park, SouthPark remains an enduring pillar of Charlotte real estate.
