History of Rock HillMove here for great quality of life.
Rock Hill gets its name from a rocky flint hill encountered by railway crews constructing the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad in 1852. Incorporated in 1892, the town quickly grew into a major textile manufacturing center, powered by the Catawba River and anchored by large mills like the Rock Hill Cotton Factory and the Arcade Mill.
Beyond textiles, Rock Hill played a significant role in Southern industrial and educational history, becoming home to Winthrop University in 1895 and the Rock Hill Buggy Company. During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Rock Hill gained national attention as the site of historic peaceful lunch counter sit-ins by the “Friendship Nine.”
As manufacturing shifted in the late 20th century, Rock Hill successfully repurposed its historic textile corridors into vibrant mixed-use hubs like the Knowledge Park district and Riverwalk. Today, Rock Hill is nationally recognized as “Football City USA” and a premier sports tourism destination.
